DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Free seminar aims to help black women
YOUNGSTOWN -- A free seminar to address the issue of domestic violence for black women will be held from noon until 3 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Unity Building, 2943 McGuffey Road.
October is domestic violence awareness month.
The seminar's topic is "the black woman's response to domestic violence." There will be open discussions about passages from Evelyn C. White's book, "Chain, Chain, Change," including:
"The experience of slavery, lynching, segregation, imprisonment and daily urban living have taken a toll on black men. Black women have been conditioned to repair the damage that has been done to black families. They have taken the responsibility to keep the family together at all cost. However, black women are sensitive to the effects of racism and the victimization of black men. This is one reason they should not have to endure abuse from their partners."
The event is sponsored by Youngstown Detective Sgt. Delphine Baldwin Casey of the Crisis Intervention Unit and Elizabeth Hudson, director of the Unity Building. Please call (330) 740-0471 if you can attend.
