GIRLS BASKETBALL Campbell snaps long losing streak



The Red Devils had lost 27 straight before defeating Lordstown.
CAMPBELL -- The Campbell Memorial High girls basketball team used a quick start to defeat Lordstown 38-30 Monday night and snap a 27-game losing streak.
The victory was the first for Campbell since Jan. 27, 2003, when the defeated Wilson 47-31.
The victory was also the first for Campbell coach Stacie Cepin.
Campbell took an 18-6 lead in the first quarter, making 8-of-15 shots. Campbell led 28-15 at halftime, and 32-20 entering the final quarter. Campbell led by as many as 15 points (37-22).
Veronica Lewis led Campbell with 11 points and five steals, while Dana Moore added 10 points and five steals. Maria Rohan had points and five rebounds, Tim'Aira Gandy six points, and Samantha Jackson four assists.
For Lordstown (0-3), Jennifer Bennett had 11 points while Emily Rech and Ashley Gibbs had five each. Rech also had 10 rebounds.
Rayen 63, Brookfield 55
YOUNGSTOWN -- Taniesha Holland continued her high-scoring start to the season.
Holland had 28 points, matching her average through the Tigers' (2-1) first two games, and added nine rebounds, nine assists and four steals.
Brittany Taylor added 12 points, and Rilonda Neal had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Raquel Brenner led Brookfield (2-1) with 20 points and six assists. Morgan Bonekovic had 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots, and Jacki Rust scored 12 points.
Boardman 51, Canfield 48
CANFIELD -- April Melquist scored 23 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Boardman (1-1).
Melquist sank two of her 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Spartans held onto a slim lead. Boardman led 33-31 entering the final period.
Courtney Schiffauer added 11 points and Jessica Moore scored 10 for the Spartans.
Canfield (2-1) was led by Stephanie Zunic with 12 points, Katie Popovec with 11 and Melissa West with 10.
Girard 35, Fitch 29
AUSTINTOWN -- Loren Adams sparked a second-half rally for Girard (4-0), sinking three 3-pointers and scoring all of her 11 points after halftime.
The Indians tailed 21-6 at halftime, but outscored Fitch (2-2) 17-2 in the third quarter to tie the score. Adams sank a 3 with 6:23 remaining to give Girard the lead for good.
Cachet Murray also had 11 points for the Indians.
The Falcons were led by Meghan McDermott, who scored eight points.
Hubbard 54, Struthers 48
STRUTHERS -- Shari Bullock led Hubbard with 12 points, and three other players reached double figures in the Eagles' season opener.
Callie Oyler added 11 points, while Tressa Scahill and Shelia Drummond finished with 10 apiece.
Hubbard outscored Struthers 23-13 in the fourth quarter. Scahill and Oyler scored seven points apiece for the Eagles in the final period.
Ashley Ruozzo had 17 points for Struthers (0-2) and Liz Valerio scored 10.
Lowellville 70, Lisbon 41
LOWELLVILLE -- Amanda Nero scored 29 points to lead Lowellville in the season opener for both teams.
Dana Donatelli added 18 points and also had a team-high 18 rebounds for the Rockets. Kristen Pallozzi scored 10 points.
Erica Sims scored 17 points to lead Lisbon, which trailed 36-14 at halftime.
Sebring 53, Western Reserve 45
BERLIN CENTER -- Kaley Drennen led a balanced scoring attack for Sebring (2-2) with 15 points.
Ashley Amabeli added 13 points for the Trojans, while Brittney Price and Rachel Hawkins scored 10 apiece.
Sara Kutsko led Western Reserve (0-3) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Erica Zimmerman added 11 points.
