Icy roads blamed for string of crashes

At least three were hospitalized in four crashes.
MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police reported several motorists lost control of their vehicles Thursday and Friday while traveling on icy roads.
The worst crash was in Findley Township on Pa. Route 58, where two occupants of a 1996 Dodge truck were ejected from the vehicle about 5:35 p.m. Friday. They required treatment at United Community Hospital in Grove City.
The driver, Ryan H. Hughes, 26, of Whipporwill Drive, Hermitage, lost control on the icy road, crossed the opposing lanes and slammed into a berm, police said. The truck rolled several times. Hughes and his passenger, Brent A. Sutherland, 23, of Redwood Drive, Greenville, were ejected. They were not wearing seatbelts, police said.
At about the same time, Shayle M. McFadden, 19, of Route 308, Clintonville, lost control on an icy bridge on Daugherty Road, about a half-mile east of Pa. Route 173 in Pine Township. McFadden's 1999 Mercury struck a barrier on the north side of the road and continued for an additional 78 feet before striking a large tree.
She also was treated at Community Hospital.
Thursday's crashes
Thursday evening, an icy road caused the crash and roll-over of a 1988 Geo Prizm on Cranberry Road in Pine Township, just south of George Junior Road. The driver and three passengers, including a 2-year-old, were not injured.
There was another roll-over at about the same time on Pa. Route 58 at Hall Road, Findley Township, when the driver of a westbound 1998 Honda lost control because of an ice-covered bridge-overpass. No injury was reported to the driver.
