Local man charged with punching a police officer
YOUNGSTOWN -- John M. Poling, 25, of Cannon Road, Austintown, was arrested around 1:50 a.m. Thursday in a parking lot behind the Red Room, a bar on Market Street, and charged with punching a police officer. Reports show the officer was breaking up a fight when Poling came from behind the officer and struck him with a closed fist. When backup officers arrived, Poling, who is white, used racial slurs against one of the black officers, police said. He was arrested on charges of assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia (crack pipe). He was taken to the Mahoning County jail pending arraignment today in municipal court.
Crash brings chargesagainst teenager
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old Lora Avenue boy driving a 1993 Buick with plates that belong on another car crashed into a Lincoln from Pennsylvania on Ford Avenue at the East Bound Service Road on Wednesday afternoon. The boy was issued citations charging him with driving without a license, assured clear distance and fictitious plates and released to his mother. The Buick belongs to a West Avondale Avenue woman.
2 teens are arrestedin paint ball shooting
KINSMAN -- Trumbull County deputy sheriffs arrested a juvenile and an 18-year-old man Thursday morning in the shooting of a paint ball gun at a house on state Route 5 in Kinsman Township. At least four shots were fired from a 1993 Ford pickup truck, the police report stated. William B. Brown IV was issued a summons to appear in Trumbull County Eastern District Court. The 17-year-old boy will face charges in county juvenile court. The paintball gun was confiscated by officers when they stopped the vehicle, which was heading northbound on Route 5.
Election certificationin Trumbull County
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Board of Elections will meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday to certify the voting results from the general election. Its official vote count got under way last week. The board offices are at 2947 Youngstown Road S.E.
'Tree of Hope' effortto help animal agency
BOARDMAN -- Petco Animal Supplies Inc. has begun its annual "Tree of Hope" holiday fund-raising campaign to benefit a local animal welfare organization. Those who donate $1, $5, $10 or $20 will receive an ornament that can be signed and displayed in the store or taken home. In addition, anyone who makes a donation of $20 or more will receive a PETCO Foundation snow-globe ornament. The Boardman PETCO store will select the animal welfare agency to be the recipient of money raised at their location. A portion of the funds will go into a regional pool, to be used for adoption programs, spay/neutering campaigns and other animal-related causes. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 24 and may also be made online at www.petco.com.
Grant Center program
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reservations are being taken for a Grant Center orientation program set for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Main Library meeting room, 305 Wick Ave. "Grantseeking Basics: An Orientation to the Funding Research Process" is a basic orientation to the Grant Center collection. Food for the needy
NEWTON FALLS -- The Pamida Department Store here has donated $500 to the Newton Falls Community Pantry on Broad Street. The money will be used to help provide food for needy families in the Newton Falls area.
Caroling in McDonald
McDONALD -- Old-fashioned Christmas caroling will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 4. Anyone interested should meet at the Senior Citizens building, located next to the McDonald Post office on Ohio Avenue. Carolers will proceed from house to house through the village. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served.
