YOUNGSTOWN -- East Branch Library, 6 N. Jackson St., is closed, possibly until late next week, because of a lack of heat from a boiler problem. While the boiler is being repaired, people can visit any open branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Man shot in ankle
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 34-year-old Trussit Street man told police he was shot in his left ankle by one of two men, both in red-hooded sweat shirts, who forced their way into the house. The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment by his mother, who went to her son's house after he called to tell her what happened. The bullet lodged in the victim's tennis shoe. The victim said he would contact detectives once he makes a few calls to determine the identity of the suspects. No motive was given for the shooting, which took place around 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Child endangering charge is filed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Angel Mendez of Bouquet Avenue ran from drug task force officers on his street Tuesday and, during the run, placed his 2-year-old son in a truck parked on Mahoning Avenue, reports show. Police arrested Mendez, 22, on a charge of child endangering. He told police that he gave the child to a friend but the friend didn't have the boy. Police said they canvassed the neighborhood where Mendez had been running and found the boy crying in the truck and missing a shoe. The boy was turned over to his mother. It wasn't immediately clear why Mendez ran from the task force officers.
Traffic charges resultin arrest of man
YOUNGSTOWN -- Raymond Ingram, who failed to appear in municipal court on traffic cases, including DUI and driving under suspension, pending from 1998 and 1999, was arrested on those charges Tuesday night when police stopped him on the East Side when he failed to signal a turn onto Magnolia Avenue, police said. Ingram, 25, of Pasadena Avenue, faces new charges of driving under suspension, possession of a dangerous drug (Tussinex), and failing to signal a turn.
Tree lighter selected
McDONALD -- Village resident Carrie Reckard has been chosen to light the village Christmas tree at the annual ceremony Saturday. Mayor James Border said the event will be in front of the municipal building at 6:30 p.m. She will light the tree in honor of her husband Jason Reckard, a 20-year veteran of the Ohio national Guard. He's serving in Kosovo and won't be home this Christmas. The Reckards are both McDonald High School graduates and have been married 14 years. They have four children: Abby, Jared, Jacob and Emily.
Skating fund-raiser set
BOARDMAN -- McGuffey Road Church of Christ youth group is having its family roller-skating fund-raiser at the Skate Connection on Tiffany Boulevard here from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Tickets may be bought in advance at the church, 1101 Miami Ave., or from a youth group member for $2.50 or at the roller rink for $3 the night of the party. Skate rentals are extra. Admission is free for nonskating adults.
Goshen Gardens plansChristmas open house
GOSHEN --The Christmas open house at Goshen Gardens, 11365 Western Reserve Road, on Friday through Sunday will showcase holiday gifts and crafts by the Salem Humane Society's Artist for Animals program. The open house will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. all three days All proceeds from the Artist for Animals will be donated to the Salem Humane Society Inc. Greek bazaar planned
CAMPBELL -- A Greek bazaar will be from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Hellenic Hall, 165 12th St. Greek food items, dance performances at 2, 4 and 6 p.m., games, music and a Chinese auction are planned.
Christmas party Dec. 4
BOARDMAN -- The Deaf Charity Committee will sponsor a Christmas party from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 at Boardman Township Park Community Center, 375 Boardman-Poland Road, for deaf children 12 and under. Lunch, door prizes, stockings, toy raffles and a visit from Santa are planned. Reservations are needed by Saturday to bsomnitz@yohsc.com. The committee is seeking donations for the party.
