Without volunteers, there'd be less to be thankful for

Without volunteers, there'd be less to be thankful for
EDITOR:
As the holiday season approaches, family and friends gather to give thanks for their good fortune over the past year.
The American Red Cross, Mahoning Chapter, would like to take this opportunity to thank its family and friends as well.
Hundreds of volunteers and members of our community have given their time, talents and generosity over the past year to help those in need. As a result, the Mahoning Chapter of the Red Cross was able to provide disaster relief to over 200 victims of fires and severe weather, including the families whose homes were damaged by the flooding that came through our area this past summer.
With your support, we taught life-saving skills such as first aid and CPR to more than 3,300 of your Mahoning County neighbors. We provided blood for your sick and injured family members and connected local military families with loved ones overseas.
It is your continuous commitment to providing help and support to other members of our community for which we at the Mahoning Chapter Red Cross are so thankful.
Have a safe and happy holiday season and know that you have truly made a positive difference this year.

Giving thanks in Campbell for cooperative effort
EDITOR:
I would like to thank the Catholic community and all citizens of Campbell for the tremendous fund-raiser held Nov. 14 for the school children of St. Joseph the Provider School in Campbell. On this day, the city's four Catholic churches came together as one family. Under the leadership of Msgr. John Ashton, Fr. Mike Swierz, Fr. Paul Tobin and our school principal, Sister Bernadine Janci, our children are learning how great life can be when everyone pulls together to help each other.
During this Thanksgiving season, I think it is fitting to thank the great people of Campbell, who are going through some tough times right now, for their support given to our children and school. May God bless you and continue to give you health and strength to keep up the good work you always do.

A few words of good advice, especially for senior citizens
EDITOR:
I am writing this letter for all seniors, especially senior women who hire companies or independent contractors to do work on their homes. Please, get the quoted price written down in some form of a contract before you let them touch anything .
My Mom who is 77 years old (and lives on a fixed income) has been taken advantage of several times. Most recently, a gas line repair was quoted at a price of $650 to fix everything. The final bill, $900. Inspect a gas furnace by a licensed company, quoted at $58; final price, $68. And the bad part about that is nothing was done, except she was told she needs a new furnace. A plumber charged $50 to open a drain, and didn't even get it open. Another plumber had to be called out to finish the job.
So, all seniors, please beware, get a written contract and check on who you are hiring. Call the Better Business Bureau, because these people and contractors should not be allowed to prey on our seniors.
