Kelly Holcomb will start at quarterback for Browns

Jeff Garcia still couldn't practice on Wednesday.
BEREA (AP) -- Kelly Holcomb will make his first start at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns this season, filling in for injured starter Jeff Garcia.
Coach Butch Davis named Holcomb the starter for Sunday's game at Cincinnati. He made the announcement Wednesday shortly after Garcia said that he hadn't ruled out starting.
Garcia sprained the rotator cuff in his right shoulder in Sunday's loss to the New York Jets. He said it was improving Wednesday, but he still couldn't practice.
Holcomb took over for Garcia in the second half last week, completing just 4 of 10 passes for 32 yards.
"You'd like any opportunity to go out on the field and show what you can do," Holcomb said. "I don't take that for granted."
Holcomb, in his eight season, saw his first extensive action two years ago and played in 10 games for the Browns last season, throwing for 1.797 yards with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
"I'll continue to prepare mentally, continue to prepare as if I'm going to play the game," Garcia said earlier Wednesday.
The injury is unlike any he's had, Garcia said, and not something the gutty quarterback can just play through.
"The strength is not even near 100 percent and not in a position to where I can make a throw," he said.
"You'd like any opportunity to go out on the field and show what you can do," Holcomb said. "I don't take that for granted."
Holcomb failed to lead the Browns to any points last week when he filled in for Garcia in the second half, completing just 4 of 10 passes for 32 yards.

If Holcomb struggles again, the embattled Davis could turn to rookie Luke McCown, his fourth-round draft pick.
McCown said he's getting better and more confident each week. He is the younger brother of Arizona quarterback Josh McCown, who was recently benched.
"I feel like if they put me in, I could play and I feel like I could put the team in a good situation," Luke McCown said. "If they call me, I'll be ready. John Elway had to start somewhere. Peyton Manning had to start from somewhere."
