YSU BASKETBALL Penguins teams return to court



A doubleheader at Beeghly Center begins at 5:15 p.m. tonight.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The first of four doubleheaders at Beeghly Center will take place tonight, when the Youngstown State men's and women's basketball teams take the court for their second games of the season.
The Youngstown State men tries for a 2-0 start to the 2004-05 season on when it plays host to Slippery Rock. Tip-off for the game is set for 7:35 p.m., following the YSU-Ohio women's contest that is set for 5:15 p.m.
Both games will be broadcast over WNIO-AM (1390).
The Penguins defeated Lock Haven 70-56 Sunday night. Brian Radakovich and Quin Humphrey each had 16 points, and John Barber scored 13 points and 10 rebounds in his first career start to earn his first career double-double.
Slippery Rock (0-1) is coming off a loss in its opener at Ashland Nov. 18. The Rock suffered a 71-61 loss despite 18 points and nine rebounds from Glenn Reepmeyer.
This is the 21st meeting between the two programs with YSU holding a 12-8 lead. The Penguins have won the past seven meetings, including a 106-69 win last year.
YSU concludes a busy week Saturday against Boston University at Beeghly Center.
Women vs. OU
For the first time in 12 years, the Youngstown State women's basketball team (1-0) takes on the Ohio Bobcats (1-0) in its home opener today at 5:15 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
Both teams are coming off victories last Friday. Youngstown State defeated Saint Louis, 76-59, while OU defeated Oakland, 106-98.
YSU and Ohio have met 13 previous times with the Penguins owning an 8-5 advantage in the series.
However, the schools have not faced each other since the 1992-93 season when the Penguins earned an 83-64 victory on Dec. 28, 1992. All of the previous meetings took place between 1979-92.
In the Bobcats' win over Oakland, Lindsay Wight scored 21 points off the bench, while Kristian Kirkpatrick added 17, Tiffany Byrd 15, Quintana Ward 14 and Erin Isbell 11.
Ohio was 12-of-31 on 3-pointers in the game.
Youngstown State heads to Florida for two games over the Thanksgiving weekend at the Florida Atlantic Thanksgiving Classic.
The Penguins face Florida Atlantic Friday at 7 p.m. and will take on either James Madison or Morehead State Saturday at 5 or 7 p.m.
