YOUNGSTOWN -- The East Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & amp; Mahoning County has been closed to fix a broken boiler. The branch, at 6 N. Jackson St., will remain closed until the problem is repaired. The branch is scheduled to open late next week, but no definite reopening date is now available. Patrons who normally use the branch are encouraged to use the library system's other branches.
Fund for fire victim
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fund has been established to help pay the medical bills of Lisa Durant, 6, who was injured in a fire at her home on Wick Avenue last week. Donations may be made to the Lisa Durant Fund at any Sky Bank branch. Lisa remained in Akron Children's Hospital Monday with burns.
Woman is stabbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 22-year-old woman asleep with her boyfriend on East Ravenwood Avenue was jolted awake by a sharp pain in her buttocks and then saw a shadowy figure leaving the bedroom around 1:40 a.m. Sunday. She realized she had been stabbed -- not by her boyfriend -- and called police. She was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. She told police who the attacker might be.
DUS suspect arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police say they pulled over a white van at 1:15 a.m. Sunday on Market Street that matched the description of a vehicle used by someone trying to rob patrons at Larry's Lounge on Hillman Street late Saturday night. The driver, Shawn L. Price, 25, of Swallow Street, Warren, was charged with driving under suspension. Price was then transported to Struthers, where he's been wanted on a DUS warrant.
Hubbard man charged
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police say that at the site of a car-vs.-utility-pole crash at 2:10 a.m. Sunday on Seifert Street, Charles J. Smith, 43, of Mason Street, Hubbard, first told them his girlfriend, who wasn't there, had been driving. He refused to identify her, saying "I can't do that, I love her." He eventually admitted being the driver. Smith was charged with driving under suspension (failure to pay child support), failure to maintain reasonable control and expired license plates. Smith's car had minor front end damage, and the utility pole broke.
Drunken driving alert
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Village police officers will conduct patrols from 11 p.m. Wednesday to 3 a.m. Thanksgiving Day to look for drunk drivers.
Sgt. Vincent D'Egidio said those are the times identified by police as having the greatest opportunity for impaired driving offenses. Additional patrols specifically will be looking for drunken-driving offenses, and officers will adapt a zero-tolerance policy for anyone found to be impaired.
Overtime for the patrols is funded by a grant through the Mahoning County District Board of Health.
2010 forum at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- "Race and Youngstown 2010: Vision or Division?" will be the topic of a town hall-style discussion from 7:45 to 9 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Chestnut Room in YSU's Kilcawley Center.
This is the second part in a series of discussions designed to give concerned citizens a forum for facilitated conversation. The program will be simulcast on WYSU-FM and PBS 45 & amp; 49. Jay Williams, director of the Youngstown Community Development Agency, will moderate.

Break-in at Lube Stop
AUSTINTOWN -- A break-in at the Lube Stop, 5010 Mahoning Ave., in Austintown, netted a burglar about $17.47 in change recently. Austintown police reported that someone gained entry to the business by breaking into a plastic panel on an overhead garage door. Once inside, the intruder pried open an office door and tool chest and ransacked the office.
