Youngstown Salvation Army prepares to feed 1,200 for Thanksgiving dinner
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Salvation Army expects to feed about 1,200 people at its annual Thanksgiving dinner for the needy.
Jean Malandro, director of social services, said the meal will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Salvation Army's Glenwood Avenue location.
Malandro also noted that even after Thanksgiving, efforts will continue to feed the hungry in Mahoning County.
"Since people run out of money at the end of the month, we want to make sure that they have something to eat, so we operate a soup kitchen on those days starting at 11:15 a.m," Malandro said.
Donations needed
Anyone interested in donating food or funds for the Thanksgiving dinner or other feeding programs of the agency may call the Salvation Army at (330) 746-8403.
The Salvation Army could still use more help for its annual fund-raising red kettle campaign, which kicked off recently. Volunteers are needed in both Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
Last year the kettle campaign raised $190,000, said Dr. David Ritchie, the SA's resource development manager.
The money is used to provide Christmastime assistance and give year-round help, Ritchie said.
