Westminster sets scoring mark
The Titans beat Hiram, 131-101.
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Westminster College men's basketball team set a new school single-game scoring record at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium, as the Titans opened the 2004-05 season with a 131-101 victory over Hiram College (0-1) in the opening round of the Buzz Ridl Classic.
The 131-point outburst broke the old mark of 126, set in a 126-57 victory over Baptist Bible College in 1998.
Westminster advanced to the championship game today at 8 p.m. against Olivet, which defeated Heidelberg, 83-74.
The Titans closed the first half with a 12-4 run to take a 59-51 lead at the intermission.
Hiram answered by scoring the first eight points of the second half to tie the score at 59, but Westminster steadily took control from there.
Leading Westminster was Mark DeMonaco with team-high totals of 22 points, eight assists and three steals, followed by senior guard Ed Pagley with 21 points and six assists.
Pat O'Connor added 18 points, Dom Joseph had 17 points and a team-best eight rebounds, and Brian Fadden scored 10 points off the bench.
Carlton Dean led the Terriers with 29 points.
Geneva 97, Siena Heights 89
HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- The Golden Tornadoes (3-2) shot 67 percent from the field, including 63 percent on 3-pointers, to win in the first round of the Huntington Hall of Fame Classic.
Tim Swayer scored 20 points for Geneva, which was 34-of-51 from the field and 10-of-16 on 3s. Stefan Grundberg, who had 11 rebounds, and Nate Conley added 16 points apiece, while Christian Hauser scored 14, Greg McDivitt 12 and Kyle McDermott 10.
Lloyd Cowles scored 20 points for Siena Heights (4-2).
Grove City 81, Carnegie Mellon 73
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Ryan Eller scored 26 points and Phil Bushre had 23 points and seven rebounds, to lead Grove City in its season opener, in the first game of the West Penn Tip-Off.
The Wolverines shot just 26 percent (7-for-27) in the first half, but 58 percent (14 of 24) in the second half, pulling away from a 26-24 lead.
Jason Walters scored 19 points for Carnegie Mellon (0-1). Michael Divens added 15 and Eliot Goren scored 12.
Adrian 74, Bethany 72
ERIE, Pa. -- Brian Shaefer made two free throws with less than a second remaining in the opening round of the Penn State-Behrend Tournament.
Bethany, which didn't trail in the game until Shaefer's free throws, will play Case Western Reserve today at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.
Mike Drahos led the Bison with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Matt Drahos added 21 points and nine rebounds.
Shaefer led Adrian with 30 points.
