STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Aaron Johnson scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Penn State. It was the home opener for the Nittany Lions (2-2), who won their seventh straight over the defending Patriot League champion Mountain Hawks (0-1). With the score tied 36-36 midway through the second half, Penn State went on an 11-4 run, getting five points from Marlon Smith, who finished with 16 on the game. Lehigh pulled within three with 45 seconds to play, but Penn State closed the game out by shooting 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Joe Knight led the Hawks with 23 points and keyed a 17-6 run toward the end of the first half in which he hit four straight 3-pointers to pull Lehigh within four at halftime, 31-27. Knight finished the game shooting 7-of-15 from the field, including 5-of-10 on 3-pointers. Travis Parker had 12 points and Geary Claxton had 11 for the Nittany Lions, while Lehigh got 13 points off the bench from Kyle Neptune.
No. 6 Illinois 87, Delaware St. 67
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Dee Brown scored 17 points, hitting 5-of-6 shots from the field -- 4-of-5 from 3-point range -- and was 3-for-3 at the free throw line. He scored five straight points to key an 11-0 first-half run and had a six-point outburst that ended a Delaware State rally early in the second half. Luther Head and James Augustine scored 15 points apiece, and Deron Williams had 12 for Illinois. The Hornets got 17 points from Jahsha Bluntt and 15 from reserve Bruce Davis, who was 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
No. 13 Michigan State 104,Florida A & amp;M 72
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Kelvin Torbert scored 21 points and helped Michigan State to an easy win over Florida A & amp;M in the season opener for both teams. The Spartans (1-0) have won 28 consecutive season openers, including all 10 under coach Tom Izzo. Maurice Ager added 20 points for the Spartans. Shannon Brown had 18, and Chris Hill 14, as six Michigan State players reached double figures. Alan Anderson and Paul Davis had 10 points each. Tony Tate had 19 points for Florida A & amp;M (0-1), and Glen Elliott added 12.
Michigan 70, Sacramento St. 49
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Courtney Sims scored 17 points and Dion Harris added 14 to lead four Michigan players in double figures. Daniel Horton had 13 points and Brent Petway added 11 for the Wolverines (3-0). Michigan, which will play in the preseason NIT semifinals Wednesday against Arizona, played without starters Graham Brown and Lester Abram who were out with a mild concussion and sore left shoulder, respectively. Dashawn Freeman, Alex Bausley and Jason Harris had nine points apiece for the Hornets, who were playing in their season opener.
Iowa 85, W. Illinois 62
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Pierre Pierce scored 16 points and five other Hawkeyes scored in double figures to lead Iowa over Western Illinois. Pierce led a balanced attack on offense, and Jeff Horner, who had six steals, led a pesky defense that forced 26 Leatherneck turnovers. Adam Haluska and Doug Thomas each scored 14 points, Erek Hansen had 13 and Horner and Greg Brunner each chipped in 10 points. The Hawkeyes (1-0) also were perfect at the free throw line, setting a team record by hitting all 20 attempts. The Leathernecks (0-1) were led by Eulis Baez, who scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Eliz Cepeda had 11 points.
