NEW CONCORD -- Desiree Sterling scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Westminster College over Geneva 61-47 in the semifinals of the Muskingum College Tournament Friday night.
Erica Tallo added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Titans, playing in their season opener. Westminster will play Denison today at 3:30 p.m. in the championship game.
Geneva (1-1) was led by Jen Rawding, who scored 15 points. Ruth Dobos had seven rebounds for the Golden Tornadoes.
Grove City 67, Heidelberg 43
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Abby Moose scored 23 points to lead Grove City in its season opener.
Rachel Romance added five points, five rebounds and four assists, while Rachel McCoy and Lee Anne Lukcic had seven rebounds apiece.
Amanda Campbell had 15 points and Rachel Babione added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Heidelberg (0-1).
Allegheny 71, Alfred 44
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- After trailing at halftime by one point, Allegheny rebounded in a big way in the second half in the first round of the National City Tip-Off Tournament.
The Gators (1-0) play Marietta today in the championship game at 3 p.m. The Pioneers defeated Waynesburg College 51-47 in the other semifinal.
The Gators were led by Courtney Steding who scored all 12 of her points in the second half and added a team-high seven rebounds. Meredith McDonough added 10 points.
Alfred was led by Meghan Coddington with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
North Central 84, Mt. Union 65
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Ashley Bourdeau scored 13 points, while Kyla Hogan added 12 in the Purple Raiders' season opener.
Lauren Friedrich had six rebounds for Mount Union.
Kristina Schiefelbei led North Central (1-0) with 16 points, while Danielle Tinkoff had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Capital 84, Thiel 46
COLUMBUS -- Thiel shot just 33 percent from the field in its season opener, losing to Capital in the opening round of the Capital University Classic.
The Tomcats fell behind early in the contest, trailing by 18 (25-7) with 11:52 to go in the opening half. The Crusaders (1-0), ranked No. 13 in Division III, went into the break sporting a 36-point lead (53-17).
Thiel opened the second half on a 7-0 run and trimmed the Capital lead to 28 (55-27) behind five quick points from sophomore guard Nicole Valentino. A jumper from senior forward Kristen Benjamin with 8:06 remaining in the game cut the Crusader lead to 24 (63-39), but Capital finished the final 7:50 outscoring the Tomcats 21-7 to secure the win.
The Tomcats struggled from the floor, hitting just 17-of-51 shots. Capital was 31 of 61, including 7-of-12 from 3-point range. The Crusaders finished with a commanding 48-26 edge in rebounds.
Valentino led the way with 15 points. Benjamin was the only other Tomcat to finish in double figure, adding 10 points and a team-high five rebounds.
Capital had four players finish in double figures, led by Sara Heitkamp's 21-point, six-rebound effort. Jennifer Lilly added 11 points and nine boards.
Thiel will face Calvin College in the consolation game at 2 p.m. today.
