Penguins upset UIC
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eighth-seeded Youngstown State (10-20) used a balanced offensive attack to upset fifth-seeded UIC (10-21), 30-20, 30-24, 33-31, in the first round of the 2004 Horizon League Volleyball Championships at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins advance to face No. 4 Cleveland State today at 7:30 p.m. in Beeghly Center.
The Penguins only trailed twice in the match - at 3-2 in game one and 30-29 in game three.
Cari Leslie paced the Penguins with 11 kills while Melanie Pounders and Abby Ettenhofer each added 10.
Angie Pasquinelli dished out 35 assists and finished double-double with 10 digs.
Jessica Fraley contributed nine kills while Katie Shea had seven kills and six blocks.

The Vindicator asks area winter sports coaches (basketball, wrestling, swimming/diving and ice hockey) to send in results of all games. To avoid confusion, coaches should report all games, home and away, win or lose, to ensure coverage.

MINERAL RIDGE -- Rod Hice was hired as varsity girls track and field coach at Mineral Ridge High.
Andrew Apisa was hired as assistant varsity boys track and field coach.

NEW YORK -- The Topps Company announced the 46th annual Topps Major League Rookie All-Star Team.
Pittsburgh's Jason Bay was a unanimous selection. He was joined by teammate Mike Gonzalez, a left-hander.
Browns lose tight end
BEREA -- Browns tight end Chad Mustard joined Cleveland's overflowing injured list Thursday after tearing a ligament in his left foot during practice.
Mustard got hurt while running Wednesday on the team's indoor field. Coach Butch Davis said Mustard was only at three-quarters speed when the ligament tore.
To fill the roster spot, the Browns claimed offensive lineman Damion Cook off waivers from Baltimore.
Steelers' Staleyunlikely to play
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers running back Duce Staley missed practice again Thursday with a sore hamstring that has kept him out of two games, meaning he is unlikely to play Sunday in Cincinnati.
SRU loses opener
ASHLAND -- Michael Fowler scored 20 points to lead Ashland to a 71-61 victory over Slippery Rock Thursday night.
Greg Emmons added 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Eagles (2-0). Kevin Shorter scored 10.
Slippery Rock (0-1), which led 34-33 at halftime, was paced by Glenn Reepmyer with 18 points, Bill Johnson with 14 and Jason Bratten with 10.

*HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Casey Mears set a track qualifying record and won his third NASCAR Busch series pole of the season Thursday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Mears' Dodge got around the 1 1/2-mile oval at 177.936 mph, breaking the record of 177.416 set last November by Greg Biffle.
*HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Rookie David Reutimann won the pole with a Homestead-Miami Speedway record in qualifying Thursday for the season-ending NASCAR truck series race.
Reutimann, driving a Toyota to his second pole, turned a lap of 171.255 mph, smashing the mark of 169.252 set last year by Bobby Hamilton. Matt Crafton's Chevrolet was second at 170.881.
Owners stop short
CHICAGO -- The Montreal Expos remain in limbo, already out of one home but not quite ready to move into a new one.
Instead of rubber-stamping the Expos' proposed move to Washington as expected Thursday, Major League Baseball owners made the surprise decision to table the vote. Commissioner Bud Selig said the move will still take place, with a vote by owners coming by Dec. 6.
Federer beats Moya
HOUSTON -- Top-seeded Roger Federer overcame a second-set lapse and remained unbeaten in the ATP Masters Cup Championships with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory Thursday night over Carlos Moya.
Earlier, second-seeded Andy Roddick beat Marat Safin 7-6 (7), 76 (4) and is 2-0 in the Blue Group.
