Union publication works with nonunion Vindicator competitor

Where the strike paper is being printed is being kept quiet.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Operations for the Valley Voice, strike publication of the Youngstown Newspaper Guild union, are being conducted from the site of a nonunion competitor of The Vindicator.
The Valley Voice is being produced in leased space at the same building as the Business Journal, which operates at 25 E. Boardman St., Suite 306.
The Business Journal is a nonunion paper. The Vindicator is the Valley's only unionized newspaper. The union's strike against against The Vindicator began when its two-year agreement with the newspaper expired at midnight Monday.
A confidential source has confirmed for The Vindicator that Andrea Wood, Business Journal publisher, has sought bids for the printing of the strike paper.
A telephone receptionist at the Valley Voice, asked Thursday if the membership was working on its strike publication at the Business Journal, said, "Right," noting that ad representatives and page designers were available to help with advertising matters.
"I do not have a contract with them," Wood said of the Valley Voice. "They are leasing space as a separate operation."
She referred any further questions to the Newspaper Guild's number at the Valley Voice.
The Valley Voice was to hit the streets today. Where it is being printed is being kept quiet, its receptionist said.
Online, too
There's also an online version. According to a domain name search for www.valleyvoiceonline.com, the Web master for the strike paper's online version is Fred Sipe.
He is the Business Journal's art director and Web master. He could not be reached Thursday.
The Valley Voice's domain name was established Oct. 16, and its administrative contact, Tony Markota, is the Youngstown Newspaper Guild's president.
The e-mail address he's using is Sipe's at the Business Journal.
