S. Carolina State routs Penn State

DeChellis' Nittany Lions dropped to 1-2.
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- South Carolina State Coach Ben Betts Jr. said his club learned an important lesson in losing to Mississippi in the first round of the Black Coaches Association Classic.
"Against Ole Miss, we stopped executing. It showed us we can't play just thirty minutes. We need to go out and play hard for forty minutes," Betts said Wednesday after his club beat Penn State 63-43. It was the team's second straight victory after their opening 64-52 loss to Mississippi on Sunday.
Betts said by playing hard throughout its last two games, his Bulldogs were able to emerge with a 2-1 record and fifth place in the tournament, which saw eight teams play games three days in a row.
Penn State Coach Ed DeChellis said the Bulldogs won because they played harder.
"In this kind of game you can kind of forget about offense and defense, it's all about effort," he said. "My hat is off to South Carolina State. They obviously wanted to win the game more than we did."
DeChellis said the team was out of synch and "played as bad as we could possibly play."
South Carolina State got balanced scoring as four players got to double figures. Thurman Zimmerman scored 16 points, Derrick Davis and Brian Mason 14 each and Dwight Dean 10.
Leading Lions
Penn State (1-2) was led by Aaron Johnson with 13 points and Travis Parker with 10. Johnson, who set a tournament record with 24 rebounds Monday in a 76-63 victory over Western Carolina, had eight rebounds against South Carolina State.
The rebounding edge in this game went to the Bulldogs, who outrebounded the Nittany Lions 41-23. DeChellis pointed to that stat as proof the Bulldogs wanted the game more than his players.
In addition to his scoring, Johnson had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Like the two coaches, he attributed the win to desire.
"I felt we came out ready to play. We had a good team effort," he said.
