BOXING Mancini signs on for event in Valley
The main event features junior middleweight Billy Lyell of Niles.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini has joined the promotional team of Jack Loew and Tank DiCioccio from the Southside Boxing Club for their pro boxing show Nov. 24 at Byzantine Center at the Grove, 3801 Shady Run Road.
Mancini will be in Youngstown on Nov. 22 at Bobby D's Restaurant on Midlothian Boulevard for an afternoon press conference.
A six-bout card with 32 rounds of boxing is currently scheduled. It includes junior middleweight Billy Lyell in the eight-round main event against Lima's Corey Budd.
Lyell, a graduate of Niles McKinley High School, is 7-1 as a pro with three knockouts after a standout amateur career with Loew at the Southside Boxing club.
Budd is 6-4, with all of his victories coming by knockout.
"Irish" Davey McBride, the Salem lightweight with a 5-4 record and two KOs, will be in a six-rounder with Leo Martinez (2-1, 2 KOs) from Columbus.
Another of Loew's Southside Boxing Club amateur prot & eacute;g & eacute;s is Darnell Boone, a recently turned pro with a 3-0 record that includes one knockout. He will be in a middleweight six-rounder with Alex Black from Columbus, who has a 2-3 record with one knockout.
There are three four-rounders on the card. One has Shane Gierke, a local product trained by Jeff Lampkin, making his pro debut against Matt Horning (1-7) from Dayton in a lightweight bout.
In a welterweight bout, Glenn Dunnings (3-0, 1 knockout) from Akron will battle Terry Johnson (4-10) from Dayton.
A 168-pound bout has Jay Holland from New Castle fighting Alex Wright from Lansing, Mich.
Looking for revitalization
This is the second of a series of pro cards by the Southside Boxing Club at the Byzantine Center at The Grove, with the first being May 21 of this year.
"We intend to revitalize pro boxing in this area with a series of pro boxing shows that will showcase local talent, and we had success with our first show," DiCioccio said.
Sponsors for the upcoming card are Komar Plumbing, Home Carpet Co., W.W. Heating and Air Conditioning, Youngstown Propane, Howard Hanna Real Estate, Santon Electric, H.V. Contractors and the local Coca-Cola distributors.
The Thanksgiving eve card is labeled "A Thanksgiving Feast," with the doors opening at 6 p.m. and the first bout at 7:30.
Tickets are $35 for ringside seats; $20 for general admission.
