Viewers who were fascinated by Charlize Theron's performance as serial-killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster," can get a look at the real thing in the documentary "Life and Death of a Serial Killer" as part of the "American Undercover" (10 p.m., HBO) series. Filmmaker Nick Broomfield shot a documentary on Wuornos in 1992, and this film constantly refers to that. So it's slightly confusing if you haven't seen the first one. What he attempts to do here is to show that the horrific abuse she suffered in childhood contributed to her mental state, which became more paranoiac as time went on. Whether you agree with that or not, it's a shattering picture of someone who never found empathy even among those who were supposed to help her.
