Santa's coming
STRUTHERS -- Santa will arrive in Struthers at 1 p.m. Dec. 4 during the annual Christmas in Mauthe Park celebration. Mayor Dan Mamula will read "A Visit from St. Nick," and the Struthers High School Singers will perform carols. Santa will arrive aboard a fire engine and distribute treats to the children.
County car vandalized
YOUNGSTOWN -- All four tires were flattened and the front and rear windows and taillights smashed on a Mahoning County car parked in a lot at 1520 Market St., police said. County records show the address is a convenience store. The vandalism was discovered Friday. The car was towed to the county garage.
Shots miss mansitting in his car
YOUNGSTOWN -- Shots were fired into a 31-year-old Mistletoe Avenue man's car in the parking lot of Larry's Lounge just as he sat in the driver's seat after the Hillman Street bar closed at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, reports show.
One round penetrated the left rear window then shattered the dashboard and front window. The bullet missed the victim by eight inches. A second round shattered the passenger side rear window. The victim told police he didn't see the shooter and is not having any problems with anyone.
Web site helpsmilitary personnel
COLUMBUS -- Deployed military personnel from Ohio and their families have a new tool to use in finding needed services. The On the Ohio Homefront Web site -- www.homefront.ohio.gov -- has been launched by Hope Taft, wife of Gov. Bob Taft.
The site is designed to connect service organizations, community organizations, businesses or faith-based organizations that want to provide volunteer or discount services to families or military personnel during their time of separation from loved ones.
Cigarettes stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two cartons of cigarettes were taken from the Speedway gas station on North Meridian Road Sunday afternoon, reports show.
When the clerk put the cartons on the counter at the suspect's request, the man grabbed them and ran out toward Mahoning Avenue, police said. Police expected to obtain the store's surveillance tape today.
Contract awarded
LOWELLVILLE -- Paving projects at Pine Hollow Park, the baseball fields and the village garage may be completed this year, weather permitting.
Mayor James Iudiciani Sr. said Butch & amp; McCree Paving, Hillsville, Pa., was awarded the contract for the $32,600 project. Funding is provided by a Mahoning County Green Team recycling grant.
