Buckeyes cruise past St. Joseph's
COLUMBUS (AP) -- Jim Foster-coached teams are known for their patience. No. 10 Ohio State didn't show much on Sunday.
The Buckeyes ran off the first 11 points and came close to setting a school record for fewest points allowed in beating Saint Joseph's 76-29 in the second round of the Preseason WNIT.
In a rout of Bowling Green on Friday night, the Buckeyes (2-0) broke out to a 6-0 lead and then watched the Falcons run off 10 points in a row and take a 14-8 lead. It was the bench that powered Ohio State to an 89-41 win -- with the starters taking notice.
"The group that started got that, they realized they didn't start the game very well," said Foster. "Consciously or subconsciously, they started this game a lot better."
Woeful
The Hawks (1-1) shot just 23 percent from the field (11-of-48) and had 18 turnovers. Only a free throw with two seconds remaining kept the Buckeyes from tying the school record for fewest points given up in a game.
"His teams are always patient," said Saint Joseph's coach Cindy Griffin, who played for Foster during the 13 years he was coach of the Hawks. "We made a lot of mental and physical mistakes and Ohio State is a very good defensive team."
Brandie Hoskins led the charge at both ends, hitting all five of her shots from the field and her lone free throw for 11 points, and adding four assists and two blocked shots.
Jessica Davenport had 16 points, Caity Matter 12, Stephanie Blanton 11 and Tamarah Riley 10 for the Buckeyes, the preseason selection by coaches to win the Big Ten. They return four starters from a team that went 21-10 and made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament a year ago.
Utilizing depth
"It doesn't help you to have depth if you don't make the other team pay," Foster said after having all 12 players see at least 10 minutes.
The Buckeyes advanced to host a semifinal game Wednesday night against Arizona, which beat Rice 68-43 Sunday in another second-round game.
Nobody hit double figures for Saint Joseph's, which has one starter back from a 22-11 team. Faith Schutte had 11 rebounds and eight points to lead the way in both categories.
