NOTEBOOK | YSU vs. SW Missouri State

Old home week: Youngstown State co-defensive coordinator Dana Chambers was right at home this weekend in Springfield, Mo. Chambers, in his first season with the Penguins coaching the defensive line, spent four seasons on Randy Ball's coaching staff at Southwest Missouri State from 1999-2002 as the defensive line coach. While at SMS, he had three All-Gateway defensive line selections and also took part in the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship Program, spending the 2001 training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Basketball here: The Youngstown State men's basketball team will be here in Springfield in just over two weeks to take part in the Southwest Missouri State Tournament on Dec. 3-4. The Penguins will play the host Bears in the opening round on Dec. 3 at 9 p.m. and will then meet either Arkansas-Little Rock or Southeastern Louisiana in the second round.
This record hurt: Southwest Missouri State's 40 minutes and 22 seconds of ball control in the game was the most ever by an opponent against the Penguins. Liberty had the old record of 38:28 set back in 1988.
Game saver: Southwest Missouri State head coach Randy Ball just might have saved his job with the victory, the first by the Bears against the Penguins in nine tries. Reports were out that Ball would be fired if the Bears did not win and finish with a winning record. The victory gave them a 6-5 season log and 3-4 Gateway record.
