Visitors to Yellowstone National Park are likely to see so many bison that they may conclude that the big beasts have recovered after being hunted almost to extinction in the 19th century. But "Yellowstone Bison" (7 p.m., Animal Planet) reports that the bison face other obstacles, including contagious diseases and life-threatening winter weather.
The new season (delayed by the baseball playoffs) of "The Simpsons" (8 p.m., Fox) begins with James Caan guest-starring as himself, eager to join Bart in the 10-year-old's version of a swinging 1970s lifestyle inspired by a cache of old copies of Playdude magazine.
Nature tries to destroy Chicago with an unprecedented collision of three weather systems. Starring in this new miniseries "Category 6: Days of Destruction" (9 p.m., CBS) are Nancy McKeon, Thomas Gibson, Brian Dennehy, Dianne Wiest and Randy Quaid. Concludes at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
"Tom Goes to the Mayor" (11:30 p.m., Cartoon Network) in this new entry in the offbeat "Adult Swim" block. This "limited animation" show is built around a guy who keeps coming up with crackpot ideas and getting the mayor of his small town to endorse them.
