GFS Marketplace opens
NILES -- Gordon Food Service has opened a GFS Marketplace at 2725 Niles-Cortland Road. The store is open to the public and is designed to serve businesses, nonprofit organizations and people organizing fund-raisers or parties. It carries produce, dairy, grocery, paper and janitorial products in larger-quantity packages. The first GFS Marketplace in the area opened recently in Boardman.
Group acquires assetsof Catholic Workman
BEACHWOOD -- The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, based in Beachwood, has acquired the assets of Catholic Workman, which has headquarters in New Prague, Minn.
The acquisition, which closed Oct. 31, will increase the association's assets by about $80 million and its membership by 20 percent. The association also will acquire the Catholic Workman building and will increase its area of operations from 14 states to 21.
Both organizations are fraternal benefit societies which provide life insurance and annuity benefits. The association will take in about 19,500 insurance and annuity certificates held by nearly 17,000 Catholic Workman members.
The association, established in 1892, is a member of the National Fraternal Congress of America and is a not-for-profit organization.
Home-buyers' workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- A workshop for first-time home buyers will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at Family Service Agency, 535 Marmion Ave. The free workshop will provide information on affordability, budgeting, credit problems and the loan application process. To register, call (330) 782-5664.
New restaurant opens
STRUTHERS -- The Old San Juan, a restaurant featuring Puerto Rican cuisine, has opened at 5188 Youngstown-Poland Road. Yolanda Navarro, restaurant owner, has remodeled the former Krispy Chicken location to include a dining area and drive-through service. It also offers carryout.
