Young Leaders
WASHINGTON -- Alison Delli-Gatti of Warren was one of 200 middle school pupils nationwide who recently participated in the Junior National Young Leaders Conference. The event's theme was The Legacy of American Leadership. Alison took part in educational activities and presentations. She also visited Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Va., and other historic national landmarks.

Mount Union art exhibit
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College's Crandall Art Gallery will be displaying the works of artist Jim Sconyers, through Dec. 16. Sconyers is an assistant professor of art at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va., where he teaches printmaking, photography and fundamentals of art design. Sconyers' works have been selected for many national and international exhibitions, including the Global Matrix Print Exhibition in 2003 and the Prints! Exhibition in Rome this year. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina, Asheville, and his master's degree from the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University of Bloomington.
Albright lecture
ALLIANCE -- Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright will be presenting the Schooler Lecture, set for 8 p.m. April 12 at Mount Union College's Timken Building. Albright was secretary of state in the Clinton administration. From 1978 to 1981, she was a member of President Carter's security council and White House staff. In 1995, she led the U.S. delegation to the United Nations' Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. For ticket information, call (330) 829-8169.

Professor recognized
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Colleen Cooke, Slippery Rock University's associate professor of parks and recreation/environmental education, was one of four people nationwide to receive the 2004 Certificate of Recognition for Meritorious Service. Cooke was given the award by the American Therapeutic Recreation Association for her published writings, leadership and teaching. Among her accomplishments was organizing the association's newest chapter, the Western Pennsylvania Therapeutic Recreation Association.
YSU faculty get awards
YOUNGSTOWN -- Six Youngstown State University faculty members have received awards for teaching excellence from the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education. Recipients were: Rebecca Barnhouse, associate professor of English; Stephen Graf, psychology professor; Hazel M. Pierson, mechanical and industrial engineering instructor; Angela Spalsbury, assistant professor of mathematics and statistics; William Vendemia, associate professor of management; and Charles Vergon, professor of educational administration, research and foundations. Barnhouse, Graf, Spalsbury, Vendemia and Verson also were recipients of an Ohio magazine teaching award and will be featured in the upcoming 2004 Excellence in Education issue of the publication.

Mill Creek Baptist award
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mill Creek Baptist School has achieved "quality status," a rating that's bestowed based on pupils' high grades and other academic accomplishments. The recognition is awarded by Accelerated Christian Education, a Lewisville, Texas, organization. Mill Creek Baptist has earned quality status for the last four of five years. It is the next-to-highest rating handed out by ACE. The private, Christian school, located at 2007 S. Schenley Ave., has grades kindergarten through 12. About 30 pupils attend. Ron Shipley is administrator.
Program receives grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Foundation recently gave a $5,000 grant to the Mahoning Valley College Access Program. The money will be used to provide scholarships for students in Mahoning County. The access program, started in 2001, is designed to increase the number of Mahoning Valley students who continue their education beyond high school.
