The proliferation of televised poker will continue on GSN, which has ordered a six-episode poker-tournament series to complement its "Celebrity Blackjack."
The series, "Poker Royale: The WPPA Championship," will chronicle the inaugural tournament organized by the World Poker Players Association. It's scheduled to debut Dec. 7.
As with the Travel Channel's "World Poker Tour," Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown" and ESPN's "World Series of Poker," "Poker Royale" will feature No Limit Texas Hold'em as its primary game. The network says the WPPA's rules for the game, however, "reward skill over luck."
"We know that poker fans across the country will enjoy watching this brand of poker and appreciate the additional skill required to come out at the top," says Ian Valentine, head of programming at GSN. "It's fantastic that we are adding competitive poker to our programming schedule with some of the game's top professionals and amateurs."
Who's playing
"Poker Royale" will feature 2003 World Series of Poker champ Chris Moneymaker, along with several other pros and top amateurs in a tournament recently held at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. GSN is also sponsoring a sweepstakes that could result in the tournament's winner and a viewer splitting $10 million.
During the final episode of the series, the tournament winner will be dealt five cards. If the hand is a full house or better, the winner and a viewer chosen randomly from sweepstakes entrants (instructions will be given during each episode of the show) will split $10 million. If the hand is lower than a full house -- the far more likely outcome -- each person will get $10,000 and a year's supply of pizza from the show's main sponsor, Pizza Hut.
