School directors to vote on raise for tax collector

SHARON, Pa. -- Sharon city school directors will vote Monday on a proposal to give the Sharon tax collector annual pay raises of 3 percent over a four-year period.
Tresa Templeton, district business manager, outlined the request of Diane Thut, city treasurer and tax collector, during a school board work session Wednesday.
Thut, who was appointed to the office in June to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Treasurer Rick Fragle, is paid $27,594 a year as tax collector. That salary is split between the city, the school district and Mercer County.
Thut is also drawing a salary of $7,931 this year as city treasurer, a cost picked up by the city.
Thut's appointment lasts only through the end of 2005 and she will have to run in the 2005 primary and general elections to retain the seat in 2006.
By state law, the salary for an elective position can't be changed during a current term in office but can only be changed for a future term.
Templeton said the request is for 3 percent annual increases in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
