Nonfilers face deadline
LOWELLVILLE -- Residents who have not filed a village income tax return for tax year 2003 have until Dec. 1 to contact the tax commissioner's office or face citations for noncompliance.
Mayor James Iudiciani Sr. said 58 residents have failed to file returns or notify the tax commissioner as to why they are exempt. Those who fail to respond by the deadline face penalties, fines, court costs and garnishment of wages.
Thieves steal cigars
YOUNGSTOWN -- Burglars threw a large piece of concrete through a bulletproof window at Jump N Jacks, 2603 South Ave., and stole two boxes of cigars, reports show.
The break-in was discovered Thursday.
Police said a security door prevented entry to the main part of the store.
Catholic school benefit
CAMPBELL -- Four Catholic churches in the city will join forces to raise funds for St. Joseph the Provider School, the only parochial school remaining in Campbell.
St. John the Baptist Church will have a spaghetti dinner, bake sale and Chinese auction in its hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday
St. Lucy Church will provide live Italian music during the dinner, and parishioners from St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph the Provider and St. Elizabeth will volunteer preparing and serving the meal.
Tickets cost $6 for adults, $3 for children under 12. Carryout is available.
St. Elizabeth's will also sell tickets for a raffle to be held in January.
Autographed jersey stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- A Kirk Road woman told police that someone stole a package containing a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey autographed by Ben Roethlisberger from her front step Wednesday.
The woman said she bought the jersey on the Internet for $329 and had it sent to her house via the U.S. Postal Service.
The woman said the postal service told her Wednesday it was on her front step but the package was not there.
Police are investigating.
State Route 45 reopens
SALEM -- State Route 45 between Salem and Lisbon, closed because of flooding in August, reopened about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Becky McCarty, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Transportation.
ODOT expected the reopening would be today or Monday at the latest.
A contractor working at the site was able to locate guardrails needed to complete the project. McCarty said the road reopened right after the installation.
The road has been closed since late August, when heavy rains washed out the road and a large culvert beneath it.
Warren house burns
WARREN -- Firefighters are investigating a blaze at a 1356 Jefferson St. S.W. home.
The fire broke out around 5:15 p.m. Thursday in a bedroom of the 21/2-story wooden-frame home.
No injuries were reported.
YMCA youth basketball
NILES -- Children ages 6 to 14 may register for the Trumbull County YMCA youth basketball program until Dec. 4 at either the Eastwood or downtown Warren YMCA location.
Practices will be held at Eastwood. The cost is $40 for members and $55 for nonmembers.
Meetings for volunteer coaches will be Nov. 30 and Dec. 2.
Registration for the age 4 and 5 basketball league ends Dec. 20. Games for this league will also be held at Eastwood.
Gazebo dedication rite
BAZETTA -- A dedication ceremony for a new 26-foot-by-26-foot gazebo will be held in Bazetta Park at noon Saturday.
The ornamental gazebo, large enough to seat 100, is being dedicated to Bernice M. Oakes.
The township trustees and park board were able to construct the approximately $21,000 building with inheritance tax on her estate, officials said.
Lisbon Inn robbery clue
LISBON -- Police hope a note written on a BP gas station receipt will provide clues to a robbery at the Lisbon Inn on state Route 154 near the Route 11 interchange.
Police are seeking two men who fled with about $200 they took from a night-shift clerk.
Police said two white men in their late 20s or early 30s with blond or light brown hair handed the desk clerk a note written on a BP receipt, demanding money about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
They did not show a weapon, but one man kept both hands in his coat pockets.
The men fled in a silver Chevrolet Cavalier.
