Father faces charges in baby shooting

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) -- A 4-month-old baby is hospitalized in fair condition after being shot accidentally by his father in his home.
The 38-caliber bullet pierced the buttocks of Richard Hill Jr. His father, Richard Hill, 24, has been charged with felony child endangering and having weapons under disability.
Police said the infant's mother, Sadie Davis, 17, was holding him in the bedroom Wednesday when Hill picked up a handgun apparently to place it in another location and it discharged accidentally.
The bullet grazed the baby's left buttocks then traveled through his right buttocks, narrowly missing his vital organs and his mother.
"I have to believe in divine intervention in this one," Detective Fred Shuemake said. "It is by the grace of God that this child is alive."
The baby was listed in fair condition at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
Shuemake said there was no indication that Hill purposely shot at Davis or the baby.
"But the gun just can't go off by itself; the only way a gun fires is if the trigger is pulled," Shuemake said.
Hill was to be arraigned today in Middletown Municipal Court. He remained jailed in lieu of $105,000 bond.
