Sun Valley coach Joe Possenti had no idea how many touchdowns Tony Canci had scored midway through the third quarter of a recent game against Oxford. When Possenti was told that Canci needed only 9 yards for a 300-yard rushing performance, the coach decided to give him the football a couple more times, then get him out of the game.
"On the next carry, he goes 70-some yards for a touchdown," Possenti said. "I didn't know until after the game that he scored eight touchdowns."
The final touchdown put Canci into the unofficial Pennsylvania high record book for most touchdowns in a game. Canci, who is 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, finished with 364 yards rushing in the 54-0 victory and had a 60-yard pass reception touchdown.
"It wasn't like we were throwing or trying to run up the score," Possenti said. "We run the ball most of the time with Tony getting it. You can't tell him to fall down out there when he gets it."
Canci has scored 28 touchdowns this season and is closing in on several Delaware County records for Sun Valley, which is located near Chester, Pa.
