McGregor set for on-stage debut in 'Guys and Dolls'

LONDON (AP) -- Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, famous for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, will make his musical theater debut in a revival of "Guys and Dolls" in London's West End, producers confirmed earlier this week.
McGregor, 33, will play the role of Sky Masterson in the West End production of Frank Loesser's 1950s classic, which will premiere in June next year.
The show will be the first on-stage singing role for the "Trainspotting" and "Big Fish" star who has previously performed in theater and displayed his singing and dancing talents opposite Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrman's musical film "Moulin Rouge."
The show is being directed by Michael Grandage, artistic director of London's Donmar Warehouse. The theater where it will be staged has not been confirmed.
McGregor, who recently published a book about his 20,000-mile, round-the-world motorcycle trip, is currently filming "The Island" with "Lost in Translation" star Scarlett Johansson.
The role of Masterson was made famous by Marlon Brando, who played the gambler in the 1955 Hollywood movie that also starred Jean Simmons and Frank Sinatra.
"Guys and Dolls," Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows' adaptation of Damon Runyon stories about New York tough guys and their gals, opened on Broadway in 1950. The show won eight Tony awards, including a best actor prize for Robert Alda, who starred as Masterson.
The musical has been revived countless times over the years. The last West End production was a National Theatre production in 1996. The show was last revived on Broadway in an acclaimed production that starred Faith Prince and Nathan Lane.
