Man dies in collision
AUSTINTOWN -- Leonard Richard Jr., 54, of Youngstown died in a head-on collision when his car was struck by a wrong-way driver about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday on the Interstate 680 ramp to state Route 11, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Canfield.
Harry Caughanauer, 54, of Pittsburgh drove north in the southbound lane on the ramp, the patrol said. He was in stable condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center with a leg fracture. The accident remains under investigation.
Boy charged in assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old East Middle School boy was arrested Wednesday afternoon at the school and charged with assault of a teacher. The teacher told police that she was punched and kicked by the Choice Court boy. Reports don't say what provoked the attack.
Group targets tobacco
YOUNGSTOWN-- The Mahoning-Columbian-Ashtabula-Trumbull Tobacco Prevention and Control Coalition will present a free conference titled "Tobacco Legislation, School Policy and the Community: The Impact of Enforcement" from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, at the McKay Auditorium in Beeghly Hall at Youngstown State University.
Speakers and sessions will explore creating a tobacco-free school environment. Bruce Talbot, Illinois Crime Commission's Police Officer of the Year of 2000, will be featured.
Student's assault charge
STRUTHERS -- Police charged a 14-year-old Fourth Street boy, a student at Struthers High School, with assault and menacing after he reportedly threatened to punch a 14-year-old girl in the mouth and slammed a locker door on her thumb.
A police report says the boy threatened the girl during a morning class Monday and slammed the locker on her thumb at the end of the day while she was putting away her books. The girl was treated at Beeghly Medical Park for a possible chipped bone.
Decline in tax collections
LOWELLVILLE -- Income tax collections through September are about $12,000 less than the same time last year, according to Mayor James Iudiciani Sr.
Annual tax revenues deposited by September 2003 were $230,606.93; 2004 annual tax revenues deposited through September are $218,825.25.
Firearm citation issued
YOUNGSTOWN -- Russell Cappitte, 41, of Cameron Avenue was issued a citation Wednesday that charges him with illegal discharge of a firearm.
Cappitte told police that he has ongoing problems with pit bulls in his neighborhood and shot at one that had charged at his father. A deputy dog warden arrived and took the dog, reports show.
Arrested in traffic stop
YOUNGSTOWN -- A traffic stop Wednesday afternoon on Glenwood Avenue for a cracked windshield and no front license plate turned up a lot of suspected crack cocaine and resulted in two arrests.
Both the driver, John C. Floyd Jr., 37, of West Evergreen Avenue, and his passenger, Kirk R. Dawson, 36, of Parkwood Avenue, were arrested on charges of aggravated trafficking in crack and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Police confiscated two open cans of beer.
Floyd was also charged with unsafe auto and improper display of plates. Police said Floyd had 65 packaged-for-sale bags of suspected crack in his coat pocket and Dawson had 15 packaged-for-sale bags of suspected crack in his pants pocket.
Officers also seized $390 from Floyd and $255 from Dawson.
Equipment for 911 bought
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners bought $432,000 worth of radio equipment for the county 911 operation.
The gear, to be located on towers throughout the county, will allow more efficient use of radio frequencies for police and fire departments, said Tim Gladis, the county 911 director.
Money for the equipment, to be purchased from Stanley Communications of Boardman, comes from a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
