Man sues, allegingassault while in jail
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Benita Avenue man says he was assaulted with boiling water and punched in his face while he was an inmate last year at the Mahoning County Jail.
Michael E. Edmonds Jr. is suing Mahoning County, Sheriff Randall Wellington and Vincent Moorer of Youngstown in a lawsuit filed recently in U.S. District Court. The suit seeks at least $500,000 in damages.
Edmonds' lawsuit says he and Moorer were inmates at the jail in November 2003. It says Moorer filled two drinking glasses with water, put them in a microwave oven until the water boiled and then threw the water in Edmonds' face. Moorer then punched Edmonds in the face, the suit says.
Wellington declined to comment on the lawsuit because he had not seen it.
Man fined after crash
CAMPBELL -- Judge John P. Almasy fined Michael Mitulinski, 21, of Tenney Avenue $100 plus court costs after finding him guilty Tuesday of failing to control his vehicle. A charge of hit-skip was dismissed.
Mitulinski was arrested July 26 after crashing his 1995 Pontiac Bonneville into a pole along Wilson Avenue. A witness gave police the license plate number of a car that transported Mitulinski from the scene.

Recycling grants awarded
COLUMBUS -- Local counties are sharing in some $7 million worth of community recycling and litter prevention grants statewide, Gov. Bob Taft announced. Local grants include $84,410 for Columbiana County, $84,900 for the Mahoning County Solid Waste Management District, and $162,725 for the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District.
The money comes from a franchise tax on businesses that make or sell products that may become litter, including newspapers, plastic bottles and cans.
Trustees OK proposal
HUBBARD -- Township trustees approved a motion in support of an airport zoning district that would limit building heights in Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport flight paths.
The airport zoning district was proposed by Operation Soar, a committee dedicated to helping insulate the Youngstown Joint Air Force Reserve Station from a planned round of military base closures next year. The air station uses the airport's runways.
The proposal would limit dense settlements and tall buildings in swaths of Vienna, Hubbard, Bazetta, Howland, Brookfield and Fowler.
However, the proposed regulations -- which mirror FAA regulations -- would only impact buildings over 150 feet tall. There are few, if any, buildings that tall in Trumbull County, and none in the airport vicinity.
