MAHONING
Youngstown: Buffalo Soldiers, members of the Army's all-black 9th and 10th Cavalries formed in 1866, will be honored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6488 at its Veterans Day service Thursday.
The majority of the Buffalo Soldiers, so-named by the Cheyenne and Comanche, had served in all-black units in the Union Army during the Civil War. They constituted about 20 percent of all cavalry forces on the American frontier until the early 1890s, said Herman Adams, program chairman.
Though largely unknown, the 9th and 10th Cavalries participated in campaigns against Mexican revolutionaries, American Indians, outlaws, comancheros and rustlers. They also helped explore and map large areas of the Southwest, strung hundreds of miles of telegraph lines, built and repaired frontier outposts, and protected crews building the railroads, Adams said.
There will be an informational program and tributes to the Buffalo Soldiers during the service, which begins at 10:30 a.m. at the post home, 2065 Coitsville-Hubbard Road.
The guest speaker for the program is 7th District Court of Appeals Judge Joseph J. Vukovich. There will also be remarks by Sandra Graves, district and post president of the Ladies Auxiliary, and Dr. Wendy Webb, superintendent of Youngstown City Schools.
Youngstown: The names of 56 Youngstown State University faculty, staff and students who died on active military duty will be read during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the 9/11 Memorial on the campus core of YSU.
The names of the dead will be read by YSU faculty and staff who also are military veterans. The service has been an annual event since 1996, when Veterans Plaza opened at YSU.

The Smoky Hollow Memorial has been a focal point of Streetscape's beautification efforts. Streetscape has installed landscaping at the Smoky Hollow Memorial and oversees its maintenance. The memorial's improved landscape serves as a tribute to veterans from the Smoky Hollow area.
