Caller scams woman by pretending to be old friend

SHARON, Pa. -- Police said another city woman has been scammed by a telephone caller posing as an old friend.
A 72-year-old McClure Avenue woman told police she got a call shortly after 7 p.m. Monday from a woman pretending to be an old friend from the neighborhood. The caller said she was gravely ill and needed to borrow $100 and would send someone to pick up the cash.
The victim told police she set aside $120, a bag of frozen soup and some cookies for the woman but got suspicious when a young black woman came to the house and picked up the items.
The woman left the scene in a small, dark station wagon, the victim said.
Police said that's the third case of that type of scam reported in the city in recent weeks.
The caller poses as a relative or an old friend and asks for a relatively small amount of money, which is then picked up by a black woman.
In the first two cases, a black man was seen driving the vehicle that brought the black woman to the scene, police said.
Monday's victim didn't see who was driving the car, police said.
