Man dies after fight
WARREN -- A 44-year-old Parkman Road man died Sunday morning after a fight Saturday in the parking lot of a local bar. According to police reports, Jeff Smith, who lived above the Villa Madrid, 3950 Parkman Road, died early Sunday at St. Joseph Medical Center. Police said Smith and Jason Airwyke, 27, of S. Leavitt Road, Leavittsburg, were fighting in the parking lot behind the bar around 5 a.m. Saturday when Smith fell to the ground. Police were called because Smith was lying in the parking lot unconscious, reports state. Airwyke was arrested on a manslaughter charge and was to appear in municipal court today.
14-year-old arrested
WARREN -- A 14-year-old girl was arrested by city police after she walked into the police station with a small amount of suspected crack cocaine. The suspected illegal drug was found in the girl's pink purse, which was searched by security when she entered the building around 9 a.m. today. The girl told the officer the drug did not belong to her but she declined to say how it got into her purse.
Man robs tobacco store
GIRARD -- Police are searching for a man who pointed a gun at a store clerk and fled with an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register. According to reports, officers were flagged down by a customer of Tobacco Plus on North State Street shortly after 11:30 a.m. Saturday. A female clerk of the store told police that a white male, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds brought a carton of cigarettes to the counter, then pulled a black nylon stocking cap over his face, pulled out a large silver gun and demanded all the money in the register. The clerk said the man, who was wearing jeans and a blue plaid shirt, stuck the gun into her ribs and ordered her to the end of the counter, then tried to remove a security tape and took a cordless phone before fleeing the store.
Gunman robs gas station
NILES -- Police are searching for a man who robbed a gas station at gunpoint over the weekend. According to reports, a male clerk at Fuel Mart on West Park Avenue said a white man wearing a black stocking cap entered the store at 1:40 a.m. Saturday and pointed a semiautomatic pistol at the clerk, demanding the money in the cash register. The clerk said he was ordered into a storage area by the gunman, who then fled.
Club operator cited
YOUNGSTOWN -- David T. Riley, 37, of North Highland Avenue, Girard, was issued a citation at 3:19 a.m. Sunday that charged him with illegally operating a bottle club. Police said they investigated after hearing loud music and seeing a lot of cars in the parking lot of the Disconnected Motorcycle Club at 3221 Southern Boulevard. Riley told police that he was permitted to have liquor on the premises as a private club but could not provide a membership list. Police said they entered through the unlocked front door and noted that the business appeared to be open to the general public. They saw patrons dancing and beer cans.
