Notebook: Mooney, coached by Len Krispinsky, advanced to its second state tournament. The Cardinals won the 2002 Div. II championship by defeating Columbus St. Francis DeSales 2-1 in overtime. That year, Mooney defeated Walsh Jesuit in the regional championship. The Cardinals took a similar path this season, ousting Walsh Jesuit 2-1 last Saturday in Canton. Kiki Willis scored both goals, one coming on a penalty kick to force a 1-1 tie. His second came with just under 15 minutes remaining on an assist from freshman Scott Blasko. Willis has 168 career goals, extending the state record, and 52 for the season. Accompanying Willis in the Cardinals' attack is junior Zack Hernan and sophomore Dom DiPasquale, with 12 goals each. Senior Jeff Seddon is the goalkeeper. En route to the state semifinals, Mooney also defeated Hubbard (6-0), Poland (2-0), Howland (2-1 in overtime) and Marlington (5-3). The Cardinals, ranked second in the state, have already beaten unranked Revere this season, 2-0. The Minutemen's path to the state tournament -- their first state appearance since the 1999 season -- has included postseason wins over Avon (4-0), Fairview Park Fairview (3-0), Bay Village Bay (1-0), Elida (3-1) and Akron Hoban (2-1 for the regional title). Keep an eye on Revere players Jon Geiser and Dan Canterna, who hooked up for the winning goal against Hoban in the regional final. In the other semifinal, Dayton Carroll is the state's top-ranked team, while Watkins Memorial is fifth.
