GIRARD -- Making for the Master's Use Ministry, Women of Praise, will hold a women's prayer brunch Nov. 13 at Holiday Inn MetroPlex, 1620 Motor Inn Drive. The speaker will be evangelist Marilyn Baytops of Columbus. The topic is "You're Still Looking Good, Gen. 1:31." Polka Mass
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sts. Peter and Paul Croatian Catholic Church, 421 Covington St., near the intersection of Rayen Avenue, Federal Street and Martin Luther King Drive, at the far West end of Lincoln Avenue, will celebrate a Thanksgiving International Polka Mass remembering the work of those who built our community at 4 p.m. Nov. 13. The Eddie Vallus Polka Band will assist. All are welcome. A light snack and refreshment social will follow with entertainment provided by the Al-Ray Combo with guest Bob Matasy. Coat, sweater collection
BOARDMAN -- Boardman Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road, is collecting clean coats and sweaters that are in good condition for distribution by Protestant Family Services. Donations will be accepted Sunday and Nov. 14 and weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon at the church. New hats and gloves and monetary donations also will be accepted. Protestant Family Services will disperse the items to families and children at Mary Haddow School and East Middle School.
The DaVinci Code
NILES -- Decoding The DaVinci Code, a study on "The DaVinci Code" by Dan Brown, will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Southside Presbyterian Church, 102 W. 2nd St. This study will look at the truth and fiction behind many of the issues raised in the book including: who was Mary Magdalene, was Jesus married, who decided what books were included in the Bible, what influence did other religious myths have in the development of Christianity, what do we know about the secret societies, and what was the importance of the sacred feminine? Tubbs family concert
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning United Methodist Church, 2214 Mahoning Ave., presents the Jim Tubbs family in concert during worship at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 14. Jim and Shirley Tubbs and their three daughters have shared the gospel message through music since 1984 in 46 states and with 17 denominations. The public is invited. There will be an offering during the service.
Celebrating anniversary
BOARDMAN -- Good Hope Lutheran Church, at Homestead Drive and Southern Boulevard, will celebrate its 75th anniversary Nov. 14. The celebration begins at 9:30 a.m. Bishop Marcus Miller will preside over the service at 10 a.m. A dinner and celebration will follow with the theme "Growing in God's Love for 75 Years." In 1929, members of Woodland Avenue Evangelical Lutheran Church, Trinity English Lutheran and the Lutheran Mission League of Youngstown organized the church near Geiger Stop, a commuter station for the Youngstown and Southern Railroad. The Sunday School of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Oil City, Pa., donated a church building which was shipped by rail and used for the church's first 23 years. Now, to celebrate its anniversary, the congregation will send funds to a mission start in North Ridgeville, Ohio.
Song ministry

McCabe to perform
NORTH JACKSON -- Acoustic duo McCabe will perform Nov. 13 at its home church, First Federated Church of North Jackson (next to the high school on Mahoning Ave.) Doors open at 7 p.m., and the concert is at 7:30 p.m. McCabe's music is defined as folk meets rock divided by blues with a dash of Celtic. The duo, Terry and Diane, will include music from their new CD. The McCabes will have some of their original artwork on display and for sale. The McCabes have performed as far west as Utah, and overseas. The concert is free, and all are welcome.
Spokesman at service
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rev. Ed Smelser, a U.S. spokesman for the International Christian Embassy of Jerusalem for nearly five years, will speak at the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday at Fifth Avenue Community Church, 1361 Fifth Ave. The Rev. Mr. Smelser has been a seminar speaker and plenary sessions speaker at the Embassy's celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles. A former senior and associate pastor at Pleasant Valley Evangelical Church in Niles, Mr. Smelser also has hosted many tour groups to Israel.
