SHARON, Pa. -- Students attending Penn State Shenango have been awarded $325,277 in scholarships from nearly 50 scholarship funds this year, a record for the 39-year-old campus.
That money is going to 273 students, about one-fourth of the total enrollment at Penn State Shenango.
Many recipients received more than one award.
The students were recognized at the recent sixth annual William P. McDowell Scholarship Dinner, which also paid tribute to scholarship donors.
Two new scholarships were announced this year: the Michael W. Murphy Memorial Scholarship and the Henry and Catherine Evans Scholarship.
Murphy scholarship
The Murphy scholarship was established by Diane and Jean Daffin in memory of Michael W. Murphy, a 1974 graduate of Sharon High School who attended Penn State Shenango for two years before graduating from the Pennsylvania State University's main campus in 1980 with a degree in business administration.
It is awarded to undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in the business program at Penn State Shenango who have demonstrated superior academic records and leadership skills. Military veterans will get preferential consideration.
Murphy was active in local clubs and served as coordinator for the Shenango Valley Jaycees' annual Easter egg hunt. He enjoyed collecting Penn State memorabilia and a display honoring his life can be found in the campus' Lartz Memorial Library.
Cathy Clemens of Hermitage is the recipient of the first Murphy scholarship award of $1,000. She is a business administration major.
Evans scholarship
The Henry and Catherine Evans Scholarship was established in memory of the couple by the Evans family fund.
Henry Evans held various management positions, including CEO, during his career at the Sharon Steel Corp. He served on the boards of many local charities, helping to raise millions of dollars for the community.
Catherine Evans was a life member of both Sharon Regional Health System's and Mercer County Children's Aide auxiliaries.
This scholarship will be awarded each year to an undergraduate student who has achieved academic excellence and demonstrated financial need.
Brian Walheim of Grove City is the first recipient of this $500 award.
