JOHN BASSETTI | Bowling Special League gets donation
Mary Jane's Special Bowlers League at Niles McKinley Lanes was on the receiving end of $650 recently when the American Roumanian Civic Club of Girard made its annual donation.
The Saturday afternoon league of handicapped individuals benefits from the private donation, thanks to the efforts of Debbie West of West Produce and donations from the Girard F.O.P.A. and the Girard Police Dept.
"They do it once a year," said Jack Ross of the A.R.C. Club, which works in conjunction with West Produce to channel money from collections during its summertime business.
Another source is the American Roumanian Civic Club's corn roast.
Most of the league's bowlers attend Fairhaven or its workshop. Some are in wheelchairs. Generally, 65 bowl three games in the league which is 40 years old.
Ross said that scores and averages are maintained but not standings.
The recent $650 donation from West was made to Mary Jane's volunteers Jerry and Tracy Green and Shelly Pifer.
Money the league receives is used for Christmas parties or field trips, such as zoos.
The Girard F.O.P. and Girard Police Dept. employees each gave $100 donations.
A.R.C. been donating its collections for a half-dozen years.
