COLUMBUS Taft designates November as Hire a Veteran Month

COLUMBUS -- Gov. Bob Taft has proclaimed November as Hire a Veteran Month in Ohio, calling on employers to consider veterans when hiring.
"As we pay honor to our veterans on November 11 for all of the contributions and sacrifices they have made for our freedom, I encourage employers to consider the skills and abilities possessed by this state's military veterans when seeking new employees," Taft said Wednesday.
According to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, at least 25 percent of active-duty military service is spent either as a student or instructor in specialties ranging from accounting to law enforcement, desirable assets for civilian employment.
"Employers that have hired U.S. military veterans are practicing good business sense," said ODJFS Director Tom Hayes.
"During their time of service, veterans acquire a respect for authority, the ability to follow instruction and an acute understanding of leading in adversity, all qualities civilian employers seek in a job candidate."
The ODJFS Veteran Services Unit offers services ranging from a new comprehensive Web site (http://jfs.ohio.gov/veterans) to face-to-face counseling, to help veterans identify the best methods to secure employment.
During November, local ODJFS Veterans' Services representatives are hosting a variety of events throughout the state designed to connect employers and veterans.
