Best Bets on TV Tonight
Dennis Quaid stars in the 2002 theatrical film "The Rookie" (8 p.m., ABC) as Jim Morris, a former minor-league pitcher whose field of dreams turned to dust when he injured his shoulder. A dozen years later, he's coaching high school ball. But his players make a deal with him: If they can win the district championship -- a long shot at best, beause the team is truly terrible -- Jim must try out with a major league team.
Comedian Martin Lawrence is Jamal, a medieval theme park employee who is transported to 14th-century England after a fall into the moat in "Black Knight" (8 p.m., FX). Before he can get his footing, he's swept up in a plot to kill an evil king and forms an alliance with a knight to return the deposed queen to the throne.
"Cheaper by the Dozen" (8 p.m., HBO) finds Steve Martin trying to contain the chaos when his wife travels to promote her book about their crazy family life. Hilary Duff also appears, as does an uncredited Ashton Kutcher.
It's going to be a while until "The Sopranos" are back, so why not use the downtime to revisit the mob movie to end all mob movies? Marlon Brando and Al Pacino made cinema history in the saga of a mafia don passing the torch to his initially reluctant son in "The Godfather" (8 p.m., AMC).
Ashlee Simpson should watch her back. Alanis Morissette plays the younger sister of a pop star who wants to break into show business on "Mad TV" (11 p.m., Fox).
