Statue to be unveiled at Austintown vets site

AUSTINTOWN -- Military veterans and the public are invited to the unveiling of a bronze statue of an American soldier at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Korean War Memorial at Veterans Park, Wickliffe Circle.
The featured speaker is Lt. Col. Daryl Hartman, commander of the 910th Airlift Wing's Operations Group at Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, said a spokesman for Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 137 of the Mahoning Valley, which built the memorial.
Etched into the stone of the memorial, which was set in place June 14, are the names of 113 residents of Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning counties who were killed in the Korean War, and the names of five who are still listed as missing in action.
The bronze statue, created by Poland artist Tom Antonishak, is a replica of one of the statues at the National Korean War Memorial in Washington, said Robert H. Brothers, a member of Chapter 137.
