When television viewers last saw Kim Delaney, the Emmy-winning actress was getting all shook up by some massive earthquakes in the NBC miniseries "10.5." Now it sounds as if Delaney is ready to send shock waves through Fox's prime-time soap "The O.C."
A spokesman for the hot Fox drama confirms that Delaney will join the cast of "The O.C." for at least five episodes during the upcoming second season. Because of the show's late launch, episodes are already being shot for the early spring, suggesting that Delaney's first appearance won't be until February or March.
During a recent conference call with reporters, "O.C." creator Josh Schwartz hinted that big twists may be coming from unexpected directions.
"It's going to be good," Schwartz promises cryptically. "I think the more deeply you get into these characters' lives, the more explosive any potential reveal or surprise can be. You never know, somebody from somebody's past may return, and I'm not just talking about [Benjamin McKenzie's] Ryan."
Ties to Sandy
Schwartz didn't elaborate, but he appears to have been referring to Delaney's character, a mysterious woman with all-too-close personal ties to Peter Gallagher's Sandy Cohen. The ex's arrival is sure to stir things up in the Newport Beach area.
Although the young stars like McKenzie, Adam Brody, Rachel Bilson and Mischa Barton have earned most of the magazine covers, the show's producers have long maintained that the adult storylines featuring Gallagher, Kelly Rowan, Tate Donovan, Melinda Clarke and Alan Dale are equally important.
An appearance by an established star like Delaney is a big coup for "The O.C." The actress, who snagged three Emmy nominations and one win for her work on ABC's "NYPD Blue," has also been a regular on the network's "Philly" and, briefly, on CBS' "CSI: Miami."
