New Charlotte Bobcats open play tonight against Wizards
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Bernie Bickerstaff planned to get a good night of sleep Wednesday, wasting no time fretting over the Charlotte Bobcats' first regular season game.
The way Bickerstaff has it figured, the Washington Wizards are the ones who should worry about the opener tonight.
"The one thing I know from having been in this experience playing against an expansion team, there will be considerable agonizing for those teams who have to come in and play us because they don't want to come in and lose," Bickerstaff said.
It probably won't happen often in Charlotte, where the Bobcats will be pressed to win many games this season. It's not necessarily a knock on their talent, but all expansion teams struggle. Of the six teams added to the league since 1988, the best first-season record was Minnesota at 22-60.
Charlotte should struggle to match that.
The first starting five in franchise history will be forwards Gerald Wallace and Emeka Okafor, center Primoz Brezec and guards Brevin Knight and Jason Kapono.
It will be the 10th start of Wallace's career and the fourth for Kapono. Okafor, the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft, will be making his debut.
If any of them are nervous, they weren't showing it Wednesday.
"To tell you the truth, I am kind of chill right now," Okafor said. "We just want to play hard and go out there and have a lot of fun and get the fans involved."
