STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Andrew Guman, Penn State's second-leading tackler, has a partially collapsed lung and will not play against Northwestern on Saturday.
"It's too bad. He played a heck of a football game Saturday," coach Joe Paterno said. "He has been playing well and is one of our leaders."
Penn State athletics spokesman Jeff Nelson said that one of Guman's lungs was operating about 15 percent below regular capacity. It was unclear when Guman might play again.
Guman was injured Saturday in Penn State's 21-10 loss at Ohio State.
"Guman got a very different kind of injury," Paterno said. "He got a good shot in the chest and he couldn't breathe. The first thing you knew he was coughing up water. There were big concerns about him."
Guman, a safety, has 57 total tackles, including a team-best 38 solo tackles. Paul Cronin likely will start in his place.
Pac-Man's status uncertain
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia cornerback Adam "Pac-Man" Jones' status for Saturday's home game against Temple is uncertain because he has a sprained foot.
Jones suffered the injury in the first half of the Mountaineers' 35-30 win at Rutgers last Saturday.
"Hopefully, he'll be OK for the weekend," West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez said.
Jones, a junior, leads the team with three interceptions, is second with 47 tackles and has broken up five other passes. He also is the Mountaineers' top kick-returner and leads the Big East in punt returns with a 16.2-yard average. One of the backup cornerbacks, freshman Antonio Lewis has an ankle sprain and could miss his second straight game.
South Florida 45, UAB 20
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Andre Hall ran for school record 275 yards on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead South Florida to a come-from-behind victory over UAB Wednesday night.
South Florida (3-4, 2-3 Conference USA) trailed by 10 in the third quarter before a stunning turnaround sparked by a 77-yard touchdown pass from Pat Julmiste to Johnny Peyton. Hall had touchdown runs of 35 and 63 yards to put the game away in the closing minutes.
UAB (5-3, 3-2) was leading 20-17 late in the third quarter when the Blazers drove to the South Florida 19-yard line. Darrell Hackney completed a pass to Roddy White at the 5, but White fumbled giving South Florida the ball on the 6-yard line.
Julmiste's pass to Peyton came on the fifth play of the ensuing 94-yard drive and gave the Bulls a 24-20 lead. Twenty-six seconds later, Bruce Gipson intercepted a Hackney pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown, giving South Florida a 31-20 lead.
