Asbestos-removal pact awarded for Choffin
YOUNGSTOWN -- The board of education awarded a $41,975 asbestos-removal contract Wednesday for Choffin Career and Technical Center to HEPA Environmental of Uniontown, Ohio -- the lowest of eight bidders for the project. The work, to be done on the Choffin building's fourth floor, will be performed while students are away during winter break. The task is to remove asbestos contained in the glue used to attach tile and carpeting.
Unauthorized transactions
STRUTHERS -- Police are investigating the unauthorized use of a city woman's name and Social Security number to open an SBC home telephone account in Detroit and to obtain four cell phones from Cellular One, also in Detroit. The 37-year-old victim told police she learned about the unauthorized accounts after both companies notified her about the transactions.
Trial date scheduledover traffic offenses
STRUTHERS -- Judge James R. Lanzo set a trial date of Jan. 19 for Danielle J. Carnessali, 42, of 3200 Canfield Road, Youngstown. Carnessali is charged with driving under the influence, driving under suspension and hit-skip stemming from an accident three years ago. According to police reports, Carnessali crashed a 1990 Ford U-Haul truck into a pole along Elm Street in October 2001 and then fled the scene. Police arrested Carnessali shortly thereafter in the driveway of an Elm Street home. She was arraigned in municipal court recently after turning herself in on a warrant for failure to appear on the above charges.
Public hearing scheduled
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees will have a public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday preceding the regular trustee meeting at 7 in the township administration building. Trustees will hold hearings on two zoning commission recommendations including approval of newly created township planned unit development definitions and guidelines, and rezoning of nearly 20 acres at 2722 W. Liberty St. from agricultural to residential-A for single-family homes. Developer Mark Jaber wants to buy the property from the Seventh-day Adventist Church to develop single-family homes.
Fireworks, not gunfire
CANFIELD -- Police said a report about the sound of gunfire just past midnight Wednesday on Janet Drive led them to a man who said he had set off fireworks to celebrate the election. No charges have been filed.
Fake items confiscated
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fake CDs and DVDs were confiscated by police Wednesday afternoon from a table set up in the parking lot of the Red and White convenience store on Chicago Avenue. Lewis Deloach, 18, of West Marion Avenue was arrested on a charge of criminal simulation. Police seized 83 CDs and 33 DVDs and $175 found in Deloach's pockets.
Woman tries to grab girl
YOUNGSTOWN -- The mother of a 9-year-old girl told police that a woman in an older-model red car tried to entice the child with candy and made a grab for her Wednesday afternoon. The Manhattan Avenue girl was approached after getting off her school bus at Manhattan and Steel Street. She told the woman she didn't want any candy and ran home when the woman tried to grab her, reports show.
Items reported stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- Several items were reported stolen from homes and yards Tuesday and Wednesday, including an air-filled Pittsburgh Steelers lawn figure, a diamond ring, a plastic Ohio State mailbox, a riding lawnmower, a 50-pound cement weathervane and OxyContin and Valium pills. Police do not believe the thefts are related, and no break-ins were involved.
Arrested after crash
YOUNGSTOWN -- Debra J. Hickson, 33, of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard was arrested at 12:04 a.m. today on charges of DUI and endangering children after crashing into a utility pole in the 1700 block of Ford Avenue. Hickson was sitting on the curb holding her 3-year-old grandson in her lap when a police officer arrived. She told the officer that the boy had not been in a child seat and got hit by an airbag when the car crashed, reports show. Police said Hickson's speech was rambling and unintelligible and she smelled of alcohol. She and the boy were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.
