WEST VIRGINIA FOOTBALL Henry will be penalized for bad conduct in game
The wide receiver got two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and was ejected.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia wide receiver Chris Henry will sit out at least the first half of Saturday's contest with Temple for his ejection against Rutgers, coach Rich Rodriguez said Monday.
Henry, the 15th-ranked Mountaineers' biggest offensive threat, received two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in the 35-30 win.
Rodriguez made his decision after a meeting with Henry and a group of about 16 players he calls the "apostles."
"A lot of the players said they wanted to see how he reacted as a guy not playing," Rodriguez said. "He will play when I feel he is committed to doing the things that the team is required to do. That may take a while. It may be quick.
"He's not going to start in the Temple game. He's not going to play in the first half. He probably won't play in the game. I'm hoping by this time next week that he'll understand some of the things we talked about."
Out of some drills
Henry, who didn't comment on the discipline, did not participate in some offensive drills Monday.
He stood several yards away out of earshot as Rodriguez spoke. Afterward, the coach and Henry ran the stadium steps together.
"I don't want to make too big a deal out of it," Rodriguez said. "He had a meltdown on Saturday. He's got to pay the price for it. It's a severe price.
"I'm hoping this lesson he learned will be corrected in a week. We have to do our job to keep counseling him. If he's not corrected, he won't play until it's been."
Henry's 647 receiving yards this season are more than half of the team's total. He had four catches for 119 yards and a touchdown against Rutgers.
Previous antics
Henry didn't start that game because of previous on-the-field antics. He earned his first unsportsmanlike penalty for folding his arms near the end zone after a 69-yard catch and run with a fourth-quarter pass.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Henry outjumped Rutgers' Joe Porter in the corner of the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown. Porter landed on top of Henry, who then tossed the ball at Porter and kicked his leg out. That earned Henry a second unsportsmanlike penalty and an ejection.
