Jury indicts police lieutenant on 2 drug trafficking charges
LISBON -- Authorities are saying little about a Wellsville police lieutenant who has been indicted on two drug offenses.
A Columbiana County grand jury indicted Edward L. Wilson, 46, on a charge of trafficking in drugs and complicity to trafficking in drugs, both fourth-degree felonies.
He was served with the charges Friday that were returned by the grand jury last week.
Wilson has been placed on paid administrative leave pending resolution of the charges, said Wellsville Police Chief Joseph Scarabino.
Wilson has been a police officer for about 20 years, the chief said.
Scarabino said he had "no idea" about the charges, other than they were filed after an investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and Jonathan Rosenbaum of Lorain, who was named a special prosecutor to investigate crime in Wellsville.
The county prosecutor's office referred questions to Rosenbaum, who declined to discuss the case. Arraignment is set for 11 a.m. Nov. 17.
Scarabino said that there were four full-time officers in addition to himself and Wilson. The department has about 10 part-time patrolmen.
Wellsville's declining jobs and population turned it from a city into a village. It's school district is one of the poorest in the state.
Scarabino said that with the loss of an officer, "we'll just have to do the best we can."
