Event aims to raise cash for trail work

LISBON -- A benefit for the Columbiana County Park District's Greenway Trail will be from 1 p.m. to dusk Sunday on the trail.
Friends of the Park, a group that supports the Greenway Trail and other park district endeavors, has organized the event.
Cynthia Mitchell, a member of the Friends of the Park, said anyone who enjoys using the trail is invited to walk, run or ride a bike on the trail during the event.
The starting point is the Lisbon trail head where there will be water and snacks available.
She said the walk-run-bike event is a benefit for the trail to make repairs from summer flooding.
"The trail is a true gem for the county, and like many other areas of the county it was severely damaged by the floods," she said. "We need to raise local money to match any money we get for flood repairs to the trail from the Federal Emergency Management Agency."
The Greenway Trail is a 12-mile hiking and bicycling path that winds through Columbiana County between Lisbon and Leetonia.
The paved path was built on a former Civil War-era railroad bed through meadows, mature forests and steep valleys. Parts of the trail follow scenic Little Beaver Creek.
The cost is $7 per person or $10 per family.
Participants should start at the trail head in Lisbon and sign in, Mitchell said.
Donations may also be sent by check to Friends of the Park, c/o Cindy Mitchell, 9154 Ellyson Road, East Rochester, Ohio 44625.
