BUTLER COUNTY, PA. Slippery Rock instructor faces felony, misdemeanor charges
One girl said she saw a video camera through a hole in the ceiling.
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A band instructor at Slippery Rock High School has been charged with four counts each of endangering the welfare of children and invasion of privacy.
He is accused by authorities of videotaping at least four girls belonging to the band's drill team while changing their clothes.
Pennsylvania State Police said Gerald W. Maxwell, 43, of New Castle, is accused of committing the act Oct. 26. Police said they were notified by one of the victims' parents late Thursday and went to the high school Friday morning to investigate.
Police said their investigation revealed that the band instructor asked several juvenile female drill team members to try on new team uniforms in a specific room in the school's music wing.
What happened
As they changed their clothes, one of the girls observed two hands holding a video camera within a section of the ceiling that had a broken window tile, and quickly dressed and reported this to Maxwell, police said.
The girl's mother came to the high school principal to voice her concern. The principal then began his own investigation, police added.
Police said they interviewed several girls who reported the instructor asked them to change in the specific room, and police noted that a ceiling tile had been removed in an adjacent room, allowing someone to view the girls as they changed their clothes.
Endangering the welfare of children is a third-degree felony, and invasion of privacy is a second-degree misdemeanor. The charges were filed Monday before District Justice Clifford Woessner in Slippery Rock.
There was no word this morning on whether Maxwell had been suspended.
